Adams was among seven siblings that grew up when she was a kid in Colorado's Castle Rock. Adams was born when her father worked for the U.S. Military in Italy. In the late 1990s, she started performing professionally and dancing at Boulder's Dinner Theatre and Country Dinner Playhouse. After that, she relocated to Minnesota where she was scouted for Drop Dead Gorgeous, a documentary mock film that focused on beauty contests. When she made her screen debut as a ditzy but good-natured contestant, she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Leigh's career in film began in the late 1940s after she was accepted by MGM. Her name was noticed by Norma shearer. She was in numerous acclaimed movies in the subsequent decade like Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) as well as Living It Up (a Martin and Lewis-film that was released in 1954).
